Bipolar Identity: Region, Nation and the Kannada Language Film
MK Raghavendra
This is the first comprehensive enquiry into the origins and growth of a regional language popular cinema in India. It traces the shape of Kannada cinema to its origins in a princely state (Mysore) under indirect British colonial rule and inquires into the effect of linguistic reorganization of the states after independence in 1956. Exploring the influence of local and national developments on regional identity, the book examines the conflict between the 'regional' and the 'national' in the Kannada consciousness. It covers the period from 1947 to the new millennium and can be said throw light on regional identity in popular Indian cinema.
